Visual Storytelling on the Sustainable Development Goals
20 August 2020

In September 2020, The Tale of Humankind launched SDG Lensation, a creative storytelling campaign that invited young people to explore the Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of photography. Designed to encourage reflection beyond textbooks and reports, the initiative empowered students to visually interpret global challenges using everyday moments, emotions, and lived realities captured through their cameras.
Participants from across India submitted original photographs, each representing one of the 17 SDGs, accompanied by a short narrative explaining the story, context, and message behind the image. The campaign highlighted how creativity and empathy can deepen understanding of complex global issues such as inequality, climate action, education, health, and sustainability.
The entries were reviewed by Vicky Roy, an internationally acclaimed photographer, whose involvement added both credibility and inspiration to the initiative. Seventeen standout photographs were selected and showcased in a Virtual Exhibition on August 19, 2020, allowing audiences from different regions to engage with the stories digitally.
SDG Lensation offered young people a powerful alternative medium for expression, blending art with social awareness and critical thinking. For many participants, it was their first experience using photography as a tool for advocacy and reflection. The campaign reaffirmed that visual storytelling can spark dialogue, build empathy, and inspire action toward a more just and sustainable world.
